I bought a 1986 doral classic cd with a mercruiser v6/205, for 1500good deal I think but I dunno its my first boat. The only think that's driving me nuts is the amount of sunfade
So my question uis what's the best way to fix this?.

I've asked a few ppl around my work and I just get answer that conflict with eachother. Lol one says sand it one says don't.
Any help here would be appreciated.

I like to do this. Wash her really well with Tri Sodium Phosphate (TSP) you can buy it at Lowe's. Then Rinse well with Hot soapy water and clean water. Then go to Harbor Freight and Buy one of these.

then use some of this.using the foam pad.

Don't stay in one spot to long and use a medium speed. Finish up with the lambs wool buffing pad and buff her out. She'll shine like new. That's how I would do it.

It's funny I just went and bought that 3m stuff. TriedIy hand in a small spot, and it looks like new..amazing. I'm defiantly gonna need a buffer tho wil a random orbital one work?

Harbor Freight is a Cheap Chinese Tools Outlet. Not sure what it's equivalent is in Canada.

Princes Auto is where you need to go for the cheap buffer.

Gotta love Chinese tools, one time use. Yeah princess auto but I don't got one anywhere near me. I'll check Canadian tire. So the random orbit one won't work?

Re: Can this amount of fade be "fixed"

Not to say a random orbital buffer won't work, but believe me a medium speed buffer like WOG suggested will most certainly do the job and be less effort on your arms as well. I know because I just finished up painting a car and wet sanding and then buffing it out to an amazing finish. I even surprised myself with the end results... While I used 3M products, the product suggested is specifically made for your boat finish...

R/O will not give the same results. You can try it but don't be surprised if the shine does not some back as much as you'd like.

Yeah I just noticed that. I tried it with the R/O and its came out duller then the spot I did by hand. What pads should I use with the 3m stuff?

Damp Foam to apply, Lambs Wool to buff.

Re: Can this amount of fade be "fixed"

I'm in Canada near Ottawa so I imagine the same unit here will cost me 60. The foam pad? Black one? I don't wanna screw this up and make my finish even worse lol. So you don't use these white buffing rags to apply the 3m?

Re: Can this amount of fade be "fixed"

Typically, the foam pads are color coded. In the U.S. White & Blue for Polish and Shine, Green for Medium Oxidation, Yellow for Heavy oxidation and Black for EXTREME oxidation. You MUST be careful and apply light pressure and keep the polisher moving at all times to avoid heat build up and burning thru the gelcoat. The polish IS an abrasive and can and will cut thru the finish faster than you can imagine. I would look for a White FINE mesh foam pad to apply the polish and keep it damp.

I just checked Princess auto website. Looks like they have the Terry Cloth applicators. These work, Kinda Ok, (I like the foam better) use the foam pad under it with the terry cloth keep it damp. I apply the polish to the boat first, Use a spray bottle to wet down the pad and the boat and then start on slow speed and work up to medium. Quit before it dries. Do about a 3 -5 sq ft area. Switch to the Lambs Wool bonnet and start at medium speed and go to high with a LIGHT stroke and KEEP Moving. Keep the Lambs wool Bonnet clean and Free from Clumps and build up of polish residue.

There's a Princess Auto in Ottawa and they sell a Power Fist variable speed 7 inch unit like the harbor freight one.
CTC has nothing but orbitals last time I looked.

Use the wool bonnet pad and some Compound. Foam pads are for paint or a Very high shine using a fine polish.

Rub hard .. .get that heat building up :)

You dont need an applicator .. you could just put it right on your pad and smear it around a bit using an X-Y motion before you pull the trigger full on.

YD.

This stuff must be good! Went to O'Reillys today and asked about it. Good thing I asked.. They had it behind the counter. The guy had to walk waaaay back to get it. Apparently, they don't put it out for display...... "The guy" said it works really well too. He uses it on his boat.....
