can not get 19 degree on 1996 40 eveinrude

the most i get is 16 degree @ 5000 rpms i can not get any more out of the timing rod . thetiming should be 19 degrees. the engine is slow getting to top rpm.

Check the roller in the curved slot of the linkage. This roller should have clear plastic sleeve on it. When roller sleeve missing, does not push linkage far enough for correct timimg. Photo should match your engine. Roller is item F. Sleeve can be made from plastic tubing from ACE hardware.

have you tried Joe Reeves timing. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=228183 it is easy and works.

no i did not use joe timing method i do no know how to disconnect the fast start on the motor.
