1998 40 H.P. two cylinder Force by Mercury Marine. There is a 1/8 pipe plug in the top of the water jacket. Can I run a line from this plug out the side of the case to have a pee hole and see that I have cooling water flow. What size orifice would anyone recommend that I install in the end of the tubing.

Susan,

I would think that your engine already has that feature. There should be an orifice in the bottom cowl (cover) pan that the water line should hook to.

I also believe you have a telltale on your motor. The orafice or hose may be blocked with dirt and nin need of cleaning. The plug you mention could be used if you were to install a water temp or pressure gauge.

This engine was designed to only sputter a little water from the back of the cowl. It never had a pee stream. I would like to add one so that I can see that I have water flow.

You are correct susan. There are two exaust porst on thwe back of the leg, and these shouls sputter water, as if someone told it a funny joke with a mouthfull of water.
No teltale. On the top of the block, by the tstat, there is a 1/8" threaded plug that can be removed, and a fitting installed, and a rubber tube can be run out the side, front back, or wherever you drill the hole for it.
Just make sure you have less than 1/8" inside diameter, or the volume would be so high, it might interupt proper circulation.
