Don't know how it happened, but while running our Mercury 40 the alarm went off indicating overheating. I slowly returned to slip and checked oil - it was almost all gone. I refilled and it seemed to run find for a few minutes, but then there was a clanking sound, it stopped and will not restart. Does this mean it is gone or is it repairable?
If repairable, what is probably involved?

Re: Can it be repaired?

I would let the others chime in before doing anything. Will it turn over but not start? Or is it locked up? If it were mine I would pull the head off and look at the cylinders and then go from there. From your description it doesn't sound good. It probably can be fixed but it all depends on what you want to spend on it. Remember it has a lot of good parts left on it.

Most anything is repairable, unless you throw a rod through the side of the block.
You say you checked the oil???
What motor do you have?40 Merc?? Ser# and model#? More info.
If it's locked up and you can't turn it over, drop the lower and see if it will turn then.
Remove the head and look for damage.
You might have to pull the carbs and reeds to check the crank.
More info please.J

Remove the head and look for damage.
No heads on any Merc inline engine (2-6 cylinder) Sounds like a piston seized or sleeve slipped.

Duh,
When an alarm goes off, and you keep running it, you risk breaking it.

I would think it's elementary knowledge that the alarm is there for a reason.
