Can I use Portable Gas Tank with my Inboard?

Hello,

I am brand new to boating so excuse my ignorance. I purchased a 72 VIP 16 foot open bow boat with an inboard MerCruiser 140. Boat is in good condition, motor runs good and has been well maintained..it a lot of little things needing attention. One thing is there is not an original gas tank so the previous owner simply has a plastic gas container connected to a fuel line to the engine. Eventually I will get a real tank but for now I was wondering if I could use something easy and a little safer like one of the new portable tanks. I know the tank would work but the fuel kits have a primer bulb and the fuel demand valves...can these be connected to my inboard motor or will the demand valve cause problems? Thanks in advance for your advice...Mark

Hi mark, I have run my volvo 140 on a portable tank with a primer bulb with no problems at all, caution should be used if you pump the primer too much you will flood the carbs! also make sure your tank has a vent!

Good Luck

Yup, my mechanic often uses a portable tank to help identify fuel issues.
