I have a 1989 Bayliner 2755ss sunbridge. I think the gross weight is 5200lbs but im not entirely sure. Can I tow this with a 2004 2WD Tundra SR5 access cab w/4.7L V8? The lake is a few miles away. I'm sure it can pull it to the lake but what i'm not sure is loading/unloading the boat and pulling it up the ramp. Thanks!

What you can tow comes down to what Toyota tells you. Whats the tow rating for your truck. Its found in the owners manual, or even the drivers door tag.

From the Trailerlife towrating pdf
Tundra Access Cab RWD/4WD 4.7L V-8 7,100/6,900

If your 5200lb gross weight is right, big IF, it is most likely the DRY weight. No fuel, No gear, No water, None of the GPS, VHS, TV, batteries etc... that get added over the years.

Also, no trailer, that will add at least 1500lb, probably 2000lb for your size of boat.

All that together and you are going to be over the 7100lb rating for your Tundra. Probably by a lot.

Fully loaded up, you are probably close to 9000lb behind the truck. You need a bigger truck.

You would definitely have issues towing that boat up the ramp, especially with 2wd. Throw in some variables like a wet ramp, algae on the ramp, or a steep incline and you'll probably be looking for a tow to get your boat and truck back up the ramp.

Kev,

Our 2755SB loaded with gear and fuel and trailer tips the scales at 8100Lbs. Without a heavy 4 x 4, (I tow with an 2009 Avalanche with air assist suspension) getting her out of the water will be a problem.

Also, with that weight, you need more than 600Lbs on the hitch. Stopping will be a big problem.

Hope this helps.

Re: Can I tow this?

My uncle told me this story. A couple pulling a larger boat with a small Toyota pickup started backing down a steep ramp not far from where they live. The pickup locked up all 4's and skid down the ramp into a pile of rocks. There was a hole in the brand new boat with out it even being in the water yet.

Yea, way too much for your rig buddy. You would probably do fine going down the road, but getting up the ramp is a whole different story.

I agree, the biggest problem you will have is not enough weight on the back tires = no traction when pulling it up the ramp. I towed a 26' Sea Ray Sundancer with a Toyota 4Runner:

Never had any problems even though it was way over its tow capacity when fully loaded, and it was 2WD. I think I got away with it because I had more weight over the back tires. I will admit, stopping was the hard part. A lot of people only get brakes on the front axles, this trailer was no exception.

I did make sure to never get the back tires wet, I picked the dryest ramp, and only ramps that had deep ridges. A smooth ramp probably would have ended it.

Re: Can I tow this?

I pull with a 2wd silverado that has a rear autolocker. Now, my boat soaking wet is probably shaking hands with 3000#.
All that said, I pull it up a STEEP ramp here in Connecticut. Now when I say STEEP, I mean STEEP!..... by far the steepest I have ever seen...and I do get a little wheel spin. When the locker hooks up I get none, but even with my fullsize, I would have a problem if I didnt have a rear locker. I couldnt imagine pulling up this boat ramp if it was 9000# or even 6000#.

The rig is only a V6 and I dont have any power issues pulling, or braking, but a steep, wet ramp makes the worlds difference. I would pull a boat probably up to 5000# fully loaded, but I would be scared of steep ramps.

That is a s#it load of boat for your rig!

My boat, according to the manufacturer, weighs ~4800# "ready to trailer". On the scale it is ALWAYS more than 8500#, last Summer it was nearly 10,000#. I started towing with a 1/2 ton 4x4 and quickly moved to a HD 3/4 ton 4x4 diesel.

i'd be more worried about a water logged boat than finding a bigger truck! There is something SERIOUSLY wrong if a boat that is spec'ed ready to run by the mfg at 4800#, and you are over DOUBLE that.

That is dry weight. It does not include fuel, batteries, water, gear, safety equipment.......

An example for you using numbers from my boat.

Manufacturer dry weight- 12,850 lbs
fuel 220 gal X 6.25 lbs = 1375 lbs
water 60 gal X 8 lbs = 480 lbs
food, gear, bedding, electronics, 7 batteries, dock lines, fenders, tools, etc. 5500 lbs (being conservative) for a total of 20,205 lbs (note I did not include a trailer) The point is all the stuff in your boat has a mass as well and will therefore add to the weight.

What could possibly be waterlogged in a 25' boat?
