Can I put a Long Shaft Lower Unit on a Short Shaft?

Hi,

I have a long shaft bottom end, that I want to put on a short shaft motor and body. Can I do this if I simply replace the driveshaft, water tube and shift rod - taking those parts off the short shaft, and putting them onto the lower shaft bottom end?
