Can I put a 9.9 kicker on my 16' Lund Explorer already outfitted with a 60hp tiller?

Hello All,

I have a 16' Lund Explorer with a 60hp tiller on the back. I do an extensive amount of trolling. For safety (in case the main goes out, and I'm a long way from the marina) and wear and tear issues (idling a 60hp for 8 hours at a time, I was considering a 9.9 kicker. Is this possible, practicle, is there room?

If not, are there other options?

Thanks.

Unless you have the 9.9 already I'd look at an 8 or a 6. Your boat's not very heavy and you are just going to be plowing water with any of them. The smaller engine should be lighter and affect the boat less. It will still get you back if the 60 packs it in and would be easier to handle.

I would use a 9.9 or 15 as they are both the same weight and will troll down under 1/2 mile per hour. Niether motor is big enough to plane the boat but should do over 5 miles per hour if you need it to get back in. A 8 HP with a high thrust would be fine for trolling also. I think you will find it easier to find a 9.9 or 15 HP

Thanks for your thoughts. A primary part of my question is whether the kicker, whether it is 6, 8, 9.9, or 15 will fit on the 16' Explorer that is already fitted with a 60hp tiller. I'm having difficulty imagining all of those motors and tiller arms playing nice.

Thanks.

If it doesn't fit right on the transom beside the main motor, there are trolling motor brackets that can be purchased.
Pretty sure most would handle up to a 20hp.

How wide is the transom. A picture would help.

BTW, the maximum HP rating for your hull includes ALL the motors you have mounted, not just the main.

I'll measure, take a picture, post it, and check out the specs on max hp.

Need to wait for the sunrise to do all of that. Stay tuned...

Thanks.

consider an electric troller on the bow.

You have to seriously assess the need for a back-up motor, and what it realistically will need to do. Guys who go several days into wildnerness need a gas back-up; few recreational boaters do. And nothing wrong with trolling with a 60 (see related posts today). An electric is better for some fishing because it's quiet
