can i install a charging system on my pull start-only motor???

i have a 2004 Johnson 15-hp that is pull start only. i would like to know if i could install a charging system on it like the electric started motors to charge my battery.

You need to add a second set of coils under the flywheel that are dedicated to charging and a rectifier. I picked up my coils on Ebay and the rectifier at Radio Shack.

Then you may just add a charge coil and rectifier to get battery charging, but will not be much.

Charging at max around 3Amp. Costs depends how you get the parts. Coil from a 'junk' engine? Diode bridge home made from Radio Shack?

What is it you need the charger for?We used to go about 5 or 6 weeks of weekend operation and sitting in the slip
during the week.Electric start and running the lights at night. Just a regular car battery.
If your thinking of charging for a trolling motor battery don't bother.

i use it for my running lights, a large KC light on the front, a spotlight and possibly a radio soon. I've been lugging the battery back and forth after trips to my shed to charge it but i was just trying to think of a easier way.

The normal line of thought is a charging system on a kicker won't help to keep the battery charged, I thought this too...until I put one on mine.

It is very popular here because we use electronics and electric downriggers while trolling for 10 or more hours at a time, day after day, and we typically don't run the main motor long enough to do much charging. Not only does the voltage not drop after many days of trolling, but my batteries last much longer before they need to be replaced.

6 amps is the normal peak on a small motor and this is only at a higher RPMs, but even the lower amps while trolling help.

I paid $40 for a new in the box charge coil on ebay and less than $4.00 for the rectifier at Radio Shack.
