can I do a compression check without a carb on the motor?

this might be a silly question. I am looking at buying a parts motor 9.9 johnson that does not have a carb. and I want to know if the powerhead rings and pistons etc are in good shape still.

Yes, engine should still have compression with the carbs off. Compression exists as long as the reed valves are closed.

And even with the reed valves off, compression will be next to the same, I had one with a broken leaf once, on one cylinder, still had same compression never the less.

reeds build up crankcase compression and vacuum always overlooked on a 2 stroke.

its a way to transport intake to the cylinder.

on a compresion test it doesnt matter its just air.
