I'm currently repairing the aluminum hull on my 1972 21' Starcraft Holiday. Fatigue cracks have developed at the portside ends of 4 amidship ribs. I'm confident in my plan to patch and reinforce the hull and will start a thread at some time to report my progress. For now, I have a question for anyone who has had any long term experience with sealers such as Gluvit.
After cleaning 39 years of bilge oil off the hull with waterless hand cleaner, I'm well aware that although the open areas are clean and shiny as new, there must still be a film of oil crud that has seeped into every crevice including those around a few as yet undetected leaking rivet heads under a rib somewhere. I can't believe that Gluvit can be expected to seep into these oily crevices, displace the oil residue, bond to the aluminum and permanently seal out water.
Has anyone had long term success (not current projects) where Gluvit alone can be credited without having first replaced or bucked leaking rivets?
Thanks, Grandad
