While trying to start 30hp i left the flushing device on incase it started. I think this caused to much pressure since motor wasn't running (20 min) and blew a seal. Milky substance from little hole above fill hole (still leaking). Is this seal hard to change?

Well Marc...unless ya' tons of water press on the hose, I wouldn't worry about it. What you are seeing is the water mix with the unburnt oil in the exhaust. The hole is a cavity drain hole. Drains the lower unit cavities so water don't lay in them. This is a common thing to see when running on "ears".

I have seen what the left over oil looks like, its brown right? this looks silverish, i am pretty sure its lower unit oil. I hope i am wrong. is there any way to make sure? If it is how hard is it to change the seal? Thanks for replying.

Right, the oil that drains from the exhaust cavity is a dark brown to black looking oil. Mix it with water and it's a dark milky color.

If it's got ya' worried, drain the lower unit oil and check for water. Rig a bicycle pump to the the vent plug or drain plug in the lower unit and dump it into a garbage can full of water. Put some air pressure into the lower unit and watch for bubbles. Won't take much air to show any leaks so don't over do it.

The test is easy to do and will give you some piece of mind. Keep us posted....thanks.

Problem resolved. Seems that because I had been trying to start the engine for a while the gas mix was flowing. The gas evaporates but the oil runs down the exhaust bringing with it carbon build up that looks silverish at first then black. So nothing is wrong with the engine. Thank you for your help you were right on!

Marcus
