I have SO many plans for 'after-market' stuff for boats.... I just have to find the time to develop them.

Chris..

Shall we use Altera or Xilinx to bust it open? Or perhaps just some C and a Microchip? Hmmmmm, choices choices :nerd:

Too easy and so little time....

Yep...all you need is to create a device that receives one protocol and retransmits it. Going to be way more than $300 in time and money and reliability.

True that for the end user/s and totally all academic info provided by you above as you under estimate the truest form of raw power in the US my friend, capitalism is alive and well. Plus, nerds always work alone but, we still live with our parents in the basement, so we're not entirely alone.

I think you underestimate the cost of getting any device you come up with to be certified as NMEA-2000. Also, your first step in understanding NMEA-2000 will be to buy the documentation for it, which costs at least ten times more than the $300 or $400 Mercury gateway.

Then, good luck getting any data from Mercury. I have been told by people who work for very large independent gauge manufacturers that Mercury won't tell them anything about Smartcraft, so I doubt that Mercury is going to provide you with much information.
