364V Ranger w 175 hp Johnson (Max. rated hp for boat) and I can not pull up a skier. Boat comes out of the hole fine since I added Mobster tabs, and WOT is 5500 rpm at 65 mph indicated but when I try to pull 100lb skiers it just will not get them out of the water. Any suggestions are appreciated.

That power to weight ratio should be fine, but a different prop would probably help (slower, but with more low-end).

Maybe the bass boat is too low - tow line is in the water?

How is it hooked-up? Maybe try something like this
Ed has nailed down what I believe to be "part" of the problem.

Most bass boats are set up for top end as it sounds like yours is TW. What prop are you running to get those RPMs and speed? I'm guessing something along the lines of a 24 pitch.

Anyhow, it's likely you need a different prop for power. Something in a lower pitch, maybe a 19 or 21. If you decide to give one a try, BE CAREFUL of RPMs. When pitching down like this, you can over-rev your motor and release all of the magic smoke.

We did it all of the time when I was a youngster.

In addition to the prop recommendations, make sure the engine is trimmed all of the way down when you start to pull the skier. You can trim it up once you are up and running.

The skill of the skier will also greatly affect the boat's ability to get them up.

along the lines of this topic, will it hurt your bass boat to pull some one. We had been tubing till I found the rotten floor with my stratos 254 /70 'Rude. I used the tie down eyes. Will it hurt doing it this way? Is their another way we should mount the ropes?

Re: Can bass boat be used for skiing

Been using the transom eyes in an old 91 procraft/115 merc/ no problem. the instuctions said to use transom/not pylon for tube towing.Seems most experts here recommend transom for towing tube due to the extra drag and stress of a tube compared to skis. I posted today about using bass seat hole to mount pole and pull tube, they said maybe but be carefull, could cause SEVERE DAMAGE TO BOAT. We need to study this towing thing more and decide if our boats can take this w/o damage.. I want to use pylon ,it gets the rope up out of water, reducing water spray.

You are getting good advice, I have a 25P Turbo 4 blade prop that gives me the best performance at WOT, but I do not think I would be able to pull up a skier with a couple people in the boat and the skier, even with the smart tabs. Now on the otherhand, my Hi Five in a 23P would pull there arms out of the sockets under the same cercumstances. I think it is in your prop.

My Stratos has a 21P on a 150 Yamaha. So far we have not had any problems pulling skiers or tubes. Just by trial and error, I do know now that you have to trim all the way in for the hole shot, and then trim out about half way once they are up. I did trim all the way out once, but with the slower speed, it just caused the boat to hop.

Prop, Prop, Prop. Yours is probably too steep and has ventilation holes to get you out of the hole quicker. Those vents are very counterproductive when pulling a load.

Re: 4.3l Mercruiser Prop Question

Re: 4.3l Mercruiser Prop Question

I have a 3 blade 14 X 23 on my 4.3L and it does 46MPH at 4600rpm.

If the op's engine is original, it would have been rated a lot lower than 190hp at the prop as compared to today's modern v6's. Those old engines rated as flywheel hp not prop hp as they are today. Not only that but if you're considering a Turning Point Hustler, you will find them to be very agressive props. What I mean by that for example is when I switched from a 21 pitch Black max on my sig boat to a 21 pitch TPH, I lost a few hundred rpm's due to the agressive design. It won't blow out or ventilate no matter what I do but it is always turning slower and hence the boat is always moving slower. Offsetting all of the above however is that those old boats were built lighter and less weight is a big offset to lower prop hp.
