Can’t find age of second hand Merc outboard

I bought a friends old boat with an 18hp Mercury outboard, which they bought from someone years ago . all the Serial Numbers search come back that it doesn’t exist . 7173851

You need to look at a chart that covers Canadian built motors.

Serial numbers 7173723 thru 7182107 are 1981
