cable adjustment

i have and 1974 mercury 115 hp it keeps poping out of gear when ever i give it more throttle,is this because the cables are not adjusted correctly,they were disconnet when i purchased the boat.

It could be the dog clutch or forward gear is worn. Try adjusting the shift cable a little toward the forward side to see if it improves. Make sure reverse and neutral still work before putting it in the water and starting it. You can do this by shifting gears and spinning the prop with your hand to verify.

Fays, Disconnect the shift cable (you will need to remove the throttle cable from the clamp first). Now wiggle the shift slide until it is sitting in neutral. It should not have any movement when in neutral. Now insert the end of the shift cable onto the shift slider, and adjust the barrel nut to match the clamp, w/o moving the shift slider.
