Johnson 45hp 1991 (commercial)
Boat is not in the water. Engine looks very well maintained and boat has always been trailed. Owner is caring.
Is there any way to be sure that the engine runs good. WHAT should I look FOR in buying a used outboard engine? What should I check for? I really can't afford a lemon. Please and thank you for the advice!

Hi Steve....

You most certainly want to take a "test drive" in the rig. Does it start right away without cranky for a while? Make sure it accelerates smoothly through all throttle settings. Don't know the exact operating range at WOT but would surmise it to be somewhere between 4500 and 5500 rpm. Check the engine temp....running cold or hot?

Ask the owner when the water pump impeller was last change out and have the carbs been serviced lately. Check the lower unit after the test run for water. Ask about any problems the owner may have had and who made the repairs.

Hope this helps a little.

Do a compression check. It gives you an indication of the internal condition of the motor.

For what it is worth there are many posts on this site where the buyer of a used motor starts out describing his problem by saying "The seller said that the motor runs great and all it needed was a new - - - ." And then the buyer relates his tale of woe.

The boat is out of the water. Is it possible to test it with no water?

If the owner will let you run the motor with no water(including muffs) then you should run, not walk away from it! It takes very little time to destroy a waterpump when ran without any water.
