Re: Buy new or used?

25 year old used bowrider, freshly rebuilt engine, new carpet, ready to go= $2300
Various extra crap required by coast guard=$170
Boat/trailer registration=$100
Driving a modest boat that doesn't look like a million bucks but drives like a dream, 45MPH accross my favorite lake every weekend= PRICELESS!!!!
Sure its old, but I own it, and it get me out there! Used all the way!

+1 Sevillity! ...and it looks like we have the same boat too!

Re: Buy new or used?

LMAO! Good one Jim!

There's never been a vehicle made that was good enough for me to pay the new price. You'll find that any vehicle you just bought new isn't good enough for ANYONE to pay you what you just spent on it.

You can prove it for yourself. After you bought it, try to sell it before you even touch it or pull it off the lot. You'll find that it's not good enough for anyone to give you anywhere near what you just spent.

Your reply has me LMAO as well. I talked about pride of ownership. Obviously, your standards are lower than mine....LOL.

There will always be bargain hunters that prey on those that can't afford what they bought, or find it isn't what they really wanted. Those schlups take a beating because of that ole' depreciation myth. Some of the buyers make out OK, and some don't because they buy from the schlup that didn't know how to break in an engine and flubbed up the boat from the getgo. Of course, I understand that there are gems out there as well - I'm just not willing to gamble.

The key to the argument is what your intentions are and what you need and want. If you can keep a boat (or a car, or a house, or whatever) for the long haul, then depreciation doesn't matter.

If you want to save money, buy an IRA. I didn't buy my boat to save money. To me, having a brand new unmolested boat that I can cutomize to meet my requirements and keep till beyond my retirement is worth more to me than I can put a dollar value on.

But that's just me! The OP asked a question and that's my answer.
