Burning oil

I am having problems with one of my 95 johnson 200 engines. My port engine is burning oil at the rate of 100:1, which is the reason I look at the two stroke reservoirs and the port side is twice as low. Could there be a problem with the vro. I checked all the hoses and replaced some but I have no leaks. I have not checked the floats to see if one is sticking, but i did just have them rebuilt a month ago. I can not figure this out. Any help would certainly be appreciated.

Re: Burning oil

In a case like this I'd recommend getting an OEM factory service manual as it is good for troublshooting and gives all the specs on checking oil consumption. On the side that is using more you could have a fuel restriction or an air leak. On the side that is less, could be a bad vro. One other idea, get rid of the oiling systems, mix your fuel 50:1 and use the vro's for fuel pumps only.

Concur with boobie. Dump the VRO. Nothing but a time bomb.

Re: Burning oil

The VRO pumps should supply oil at about a 60::1 ratio to gasoline. I would run some premix and precisely verify the gasoline consumption of the port engine, in comparison to the oil consumption. VRO units will mix in more oil, if an air leak exists in the gasoline side of a motor. They should never mix less oil.

So my theory is that the stbd engine has an air leak and is mixing at about 30::1 and the Port engine is working correctly.

Thanks for the response, I feel lousy about disconnecting the VRO. I think companies would not install them if they didnt work. But maybe I will disconnect it, the VRO seems to be my Problem.

Gee, Aren't you even going to test the VRO Pump? Seems like a waste of a real convenience item.

Re: Burning oil

I've been working on these mtrs before the vro's came out in '84 and have seen nothing but probs. If I still had a mtr with one on it I'd be using 50:1 premix. Takes the guess work out of using something made out of CPS.

Re: Burning oil

I am planning on testing using the manual, just raining today. I am frustrated it just seems all signs are pointing that direction, and they are the original VRO's from 1995. The engines only have 560 hours on them and they are original to the boat. I feel its time to replace them just because of there age.

Air intrusion is my best guess right now as already stated. Still VRO in 95 ??? when did the OMS come into play. never had an outboard new enough to find out !!!!

Re: Burning oil

If those vros have the white fixed fitting on top of them, defineatly get rid of them.

Re: Burning oil

I believe they are all black no white on top, I will go and check for more leaks and replace hose as needed.
