Dropped the lower unit of a '93 90hp Mariner to change impeller. Found the lower gasket(between metal plate and pump base) charred. What does this typically indicate - overheating from gears below, failed driveshaft seals, or what?

The outside of the impeller housing had a very thin layer of something dark brown burned onto it and there was a lot of sand present. Lower unit lube level was low and the color of honey mustard, a fistful of fishing line was wrapped around the prop shaft, and there were no gaskets on any of the lower unit screws. More suspects than a game of Clue.

The impeller itself was in decent shape, but I replaced it, two impeller gaskets, three l.u. screw gaskets and filled the lower unit with fresh lube. Will be going back with the rest of the kit to replace pump base and driveshaft seals and to monitor lube level for possible pressure test and prop seal replacement.
