EZ Loader trailers recomends between 5 and 10%.

Shorelander recomends between 5 and 7%. Here is a quote from a Shorelandr manual:

"Best towing is achieved when the tongue weight is 5-7% of the total gross load of the complete unit."

All the manufacturers recomend no more than 10%.

When Trailer Boat magazine tests boat/trailer combos, they are coming in at around 8%.

Re: Bunk with Rollers

Has anyone actually considered how much weight is being considered here. On a 2000 pound trailer, 5% tongue weight is 100 pounds. 10% is 200 pounds. My trolling motor battery weights darned near that much. Now then, do you set the tongue weight with a full tank of fuel or empty? Do you carry gear and toys ahead of the axle, over it or behind it. I set mine up heavy and never have to worry about becoming light. I travel far too many miles at freeway speeds to worry about sway.

With us it is easy to carry a lot of tongue weight. two of our tow vehicles are 3/4 tons ( chevy 2500 ) and the third has airshocks. never had a problem w/ sway and it helps on the gravel roads.
