Hi all,
I'm teaching a 5th grade for 6 weeks and am so sad at the bullying I'm seeing(calling names, hitting and pushing, etc.). Every day is something and kids just don't respect each other and the discipline policy at the school just doesn't cut it. We all went through childhood with some kind of bullying, some of us on the giving end and others on the recieving end. What I want to know is do any of you remember one or two things that worked to help you no matter what end you were on? Or maybe something that worked raising your kids.
I'm with these kids for 5 more weeks and I am going to spend time every day talking about this and maybe some role playing to teach them how to treat each other(at least in school). I can't stand to see these kids think these actions are acceptable. Any comments or suggestions are welcome.
Bassy

Re: Bullying

I would give some advice but I was only 4'9" in 7th grade so I never got to bully anyone! Good luck.

Re: Bullying

I got bullied in the 5th grade, until my dad MADE my older brother protect me (against my wishes). He only had to step in and become my protector once, then he taught me how to defend myself - problem solved.

I found that once I stood up to the bullies, they became pu$$y cats. Some of the bullies just wanted friends, but didn't know how to socialise.

I also had a good group of friends, we would avoid the obvious 'bad' bullies. Not hide or anything like that, we just didn't purposefully cross their paths.

Aldo

Re: Bullying

I remember whenever a kid picked on me he ended up having his arse whipped by the bike rack after 3:00. Bullying, unfortunately, will not go away. Bullies bully because they are aggressive kids who have not learned that their actions are inappropriate. Children are the true example of human nature. The way adults behave is only because society has agreed that we must treat each other with a degree of respect so society can function as well as possible. We figured out that if we want to preserve the species we have to get along. Kids have to learn that. Bullies do it until they are taught that it is not acceptable. The way they learn is when the kid they pick on suddenly lays the beat-down on them. Suddenly bullying isn't as productive when they keep getting a butt-whippin'. Or at least that is how it worked in my day. School-yard justice.

Now everything is touchy-feely-no-one-should-get-hurt. I know some would disagree with what I am saying, and I am no advocate for random fighting among our children, but our kids need to learn to stand up for themselves. The bullies need to learn that what they choose to do only causes themselves problems in the form of pain and suffering.

Re: Bullying

A site that deals with bullying.

Bassy,

I hope this helps. In our school district they crack down quick on any sort of witnessed physical bullying. If a student complains to a counciler it also gets quick response.

Good Luck

Re: Bullying

I was skipped past two grades early in school, so I was always the youngest and smallest boy in our class. I got bullied a lot.

One of our teachers, Polly Miller, who was about 80, took me aside and told me that bullies do what they do because they expect no consequences. She didn't actually suggest that I defend myself, but I got that message.

The next time David Bailey tripped me in the classroom and started guffawing about it I snuck up on him and hit him in the face with my History book; broke his nose. Miss Miller said that David fell.

I don't suppose that sort of thing is PC these days, but DB left me alone after that. I got my butt kicked a few times after that, but the bullies decided to find easier prey. They learned that watching their back was too much hassle.

Most bullies are cowards. Give them something they understand to be afraid of, some of their own medicine.

I realize that my experience is contrary to modern training of wusses and victims, but it worked.

Being a military brat, we moved quite a bit. I attended 14 schools before I graduated. Being fairly large for my age and new, I was always a target of bullys.

The best solution I found was to pick a fight with the toughest school bully within a week of starting a new school. Win, lose or draw everyone left me alone after that.

Re: Bullying

In my high school bullies would always pick on the scarce white boys...most would just hand it over to avoid the whoopin.....I was so poe....I never had any money..so they had to kick my arse for nothin...which eventually brought me to the next level....to fight back and not let it be easy for anyone....Then one day top bully picked me for sport....I messed him and his face up so bad he didnt come back to school for a week. After everyone at high school saw the results first hand and a week after...even seniors who were more than capable would not bother me.

I tell my kids today that if they are expelled I wont punish them in defence from THE bullies at school. And I tell them to keep coming at them no matter what as long as they can get up....

Send a note home to their parents staing their children are being disrepectful to other children and it is causing their education to suffer.

If the parents dont get them to behave, you have very little chance of succeeding.

Ken

I was a big guy in high school.

I remember a guy that used to dance around (more like a mosquito) and taunt me. He was backed up by some serious thugs.

One day, I'd had enough and threw him into an empty locker, only to turn around and see the Principal watching the whole thing.

The Principal didn't say a word and walked away.

I was really bugged by his behavior (the mosquito) because I could get along with anybody.

I think the Principal let it go because he knew I wasn't a troublemaker.

I wasn't a bully.

Children today need to "toughen up" and relaize that life is not all about lawsuits.

Re: Bullying

Hello Bassy,
The first day of subbing I had 6th graders. a boy was taking rubber bands and using them to shoot a girl in front of him with it. I said to him " What do you have?" he said " nothing" the girl told me what he did. I Sat him with his nose in the corner. The rest of the class started laughing I told them I see a lot more corners for each of you.I had no problems the rest of the day We need to get back to the nose in corner and paddlings. On another note my son was bullied last year to the point he did not want to go to school. I took it to the principal with a note I wrote to his parents with not so sweet of words. the next day he got along with my son. Then the next day I went to the inhouse room and Thanked him for trying to get along with my son.He Had tears in his eyes for imbarassment. Then this year we put him in Karate for self esteme I think It worked. The bulling has to be stopped by parents being parents and disipline.
serenity
