I saw this thread this morning and it motivated me to make a motor stand. I had a bunch of 2x6 hanging around. Well, it took 3 hours..Heres some pictures. I plan on putting my 1965 40hp big twin on it. Thanks for the detailed plans!

Will this stand support a 115 Mercury OK?

Great plans love all the suggestions for modification thinking of building one. Just a couple of concerns deck screws are not load bearing there designed to hold down not hold up. couple of quick changes add gorilla glue with the deck screws or drill and add 4 grade 8 bolts. the second would be for clamp on motors add a peice of 1/8 mild steel to ensure longevity, the pine/ douglas fir used is very soft or change the top support to yellow pine. The cads look great.

Thanks for the ideas and detailed plans. I built one today with a few modifications. Held my 90hp evinrude v4 with no problems before I pulled it apart.

This is a really nice stand. It appears to be a very stable design, inexpensive to build, and I like the battery/gas tank feature. One problem: it appears that page 3 of 6 and 6 of 6 are missing. Furthermore, the link to the 1.33 MB file is not functioning. Can someone help me out here, please?

Please disregard my previous post. As usual, I forgot to check the entire thread. I found the corrected file. Thanks.:D

Nice job. Heres a picture of the heavy duty one I made. To make it stong I used 1/4 ''x3'' lag bolts and washers. This thing can handle any size outboard.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for posting the instructions for your stand. I built a copy of yours for my O/B today and it works beautifully. :D

Thanks so much for the plans and instructions. I built mine exactly like yours and it works like a dream, my grandson can roll it around the garage with my 50 mariner on it. Next spring when the motor goes back on the boat I will clad the top with sheet aluminum to protect the wood.

More kudos to the OP for posting the engine stand plans:

Holding my 1979 Merc 70 hp no problem.

Made mine w/o the casters because it's just going to stay in one spot.

I made the stand just a bit taller and mounted my Johnson 150 to it, no problems. I have moved around quite a bit during my resto project. Wouldn't dare start the engine on it though, but maybe I am being overcautious.

Excellent stand for quick assembly and low cost!

Thanks for the detailed plans.

Re: Building an O/B motor stand - Instructional

As you can see I also built a stand for my "new" outboard.

It is a 1999 Johnson 40HP, weighing 81kg. Thanks to dh4winn79's post, it was like assembling a kit from IKEA. I just had to cut all the pieces and assembled them. It worked perfectly.

Thanks Haynes!

Re: Building an O/B motor stand - Instructional

I built a stand similar to this. I haven't tried it out yet, but I wanted to mention the physics of work = force * distance. I am talking about using pulleys to hoist a motor. Provided you have a sturdy overhead support (or can build one... A-frame, etc), you can reduce the force (strength, effort) needed to lift your outboard by increasing the length of cable that must be pulled. You can look-up online how to setup a pulley system to reduce the force needed to lift, etc. But basically each loop will reduce the force by 2. So with just two pulleys you can turn that 200lbs motor into lifting roughly 100lbs. Just make sure your overhead support can support the full weight of the motor.

Re: Building an O/B motor stand - Instructional

I got to give credit where credit is due. This stand solved my problem and was mostly built from old short pieces of wood from my backyard deck that I was going to haul to the curb. Total cost came to about $15 and most of that was for the reusable heavy-duty castors. Thanks to dh4winn79 for a great and simple design.
