I recently discovered the skeg fin at the bottom of my mercury 225 optimax was partially broken off. Does this have a function and can I operate the engine without it? Also, can the bottom housing be purchased without the gears, since the inside of the housing is fine?

Re: broken skeg

yeah its fine to use without as long as you don't go anywhere really shallow. You can get them repaired-a load cheaper than replacing. Ask your local service agent who he'd recommend.

No problem. BTW-the casing will have to come off for repair.

Re: broken skeg

I finally put on a Skegguard after trying to repair it myself. Very easy, took about 15 min. and really looks great too.
