Remove the carrier assembly and reverse gear etc to gain access to the pinion nut. Grap the broken portion of the driveshaft with vice grips or some such tool, and loosen the pinion nut until it is flush with the threaded portion of the driveshaft.<br /><br />Now, with the unit in neutral so that the shifter dog is directly under the driveshaft nut, with two large regular screwdrivers, insert one then the other if needed on top of each other to form a wedge between the shifter dog and the driveshaft.<br /><br />Now, hit that screwdriver arrangement to break the driveshaft away from the pinion gear. Once free, remove the nut, then pull the driveshaft up and out of the lower unit.
