broken shaft in 48 special

A budy of mine broke the shaft in his 48 special below the water pump and I can't get the piece out of there. Could any of you tell me how to get it out? thanks Doug

Are you trying to get it out from the top? That trick doesn't usually work. You'll probably have to take down the lower unit and dismantle it to get the broken part out. What year is this SPL model?

I went and looked at the parts breakdown on the 48 SPL models. You can find them at ishopmarine.com. Just click "parts lists" at the top of the home page, then drill down to your friend's year and model.<br /><br />On that model, the pinion gear is held onto the driveshaft with a nut. Since you can't pull the pinion gear through the top, you'll have to pull the lower unit apart to get at the thing.<br /><br />Sorry, but that's going to be the only way.

Remove the carrier assembly and reverse gear etc to gain access to the pinion nut. Grap the broken portion of the driveshaft with vice grips or some such tool, and loosen the pinion nut until it is flush with the threaded portion of the driveshaft.<br /><br />Now, with the unit in neutral so that the shifter dog is directly under the driveshaft nut, with two large regular screwdrivers, insert one then the other if needed on top of each other to form a wedge between the shifter dog and the driveshaft.<br /><br />Now, hit that screwdriver arrangement to break the driveshaft away from the pinion gear. Once free, remove the nut, then pull the driveshaft up and out of the lower unit.

When you get the broken part out, and replace it, it will probably fail again. You are dealing with a sprung, or mis-aligned gearcase there. Sounds like this gearcase has come to a sudden stop somewhere in it's life.
