Broken nipple on lower unit

Last weekend my partner accidentally broke the nipple off the lower unit after he cleared the branches from the outboard. I'm unsure what the tube and nipple is for so to be on the safe side I placed order for the nipple part. Part # 0336535 nipple for '99 Johnson 150HP. My question is do I pull the old nipple out with a pliers and insert the replacement or will have to remove the lower unit? Thanks.

That's your speedo pick. Just pull the old one out, install the new one and hook up the hose. Pull the broken part out of the hose before installing.
