Broken Lower Gear Housing

When getting my boat off the trailer, I had the outdrive too low for conditions and hit some rocks with the prop resulting in a broken piece from the lower gear housing (see attached photo). The boat ran well in the water with no vibration or other problems as I only noticed the damage after getting the boat back on the trailer.

Any recommendation on how to fix the damage? The gear housing seems to be intact mechanically, it is just the piece is missing which will affect performance.

Thanks,

Joseph

Re: Broken Lower Gear Housing

i'd think a good welder could put a piece back on that. gonna have to be skilled in welding cast alum. though.
or
put a whale tale on it (assumin ya got enough anti vent plate left to bolt a whale tail to). if ya don't like a whale tail. cut it back down to size of the original anti vent plate for the home made repair look.;)

i had a much smaller break on my last drive. due to a whale tail strike with a uso. i made a plate of alum. and bolted it to what was left. this worked ok. but i only had a chunk missing out of the edge of the anti vent plate between the bolt holes of the wale tail mount points..

Re: Broken Lower Gear Housing

Thanks for your response. I had thought about the smae ideas so it is good to know that someone else is thinking the same way.

I am getting it looked at by my local boat shop today just to make sure the housing has not been cracked or other serious damage.
