Broken Key in the Ignition

I have a 92 Johnson 40hp I have a broken key in the ignition. I can stick the other half in and start, but it's a pain. Any suggestions on what to do??

If you can come up with some fine piano wire, you can put a hook into the end and slip it in the lock along side the broken key and with some luck and determination you may be able to extract the stump.

If you can extract the internal portion as Jim states, possibly one of us has a replacement key. What is the number imprinted on the external portion?

If you are mechanically inclined and you have a lot of patients you should be able to remove the lock cylinder and push out the broken part. <br /><br />You can use an old coping saw blade to fish it out.<br /><br />You can purchase some lock picks to assist you. lock picks <br /><br />Take it to a locksmith and they can get it out fairly easy for you.

You might go to the local swap meet and buy some old dental/surgical picks. They work great for getting something out like this. They are stainless steel and pretty tough.

write down the key number and get a new key. then, put a little crazy glue on the end and push it in there good for about 1 minute. pull it out easy and you should see the old half. A little nail polish remover (acetone) will get the glue off the new key.<br />Good Luck
