Broken Carb?

I recently purchased a used 1987 Evinrude 25 HP and it quit on me while out on the river. It will start and idle very rough but dies instantly when given throttle. When I took apart the carb I noticed a crack in one of the parts (pics 1). I think that is the high speed jet????

The other broken piece seems to be down in the bowl near where fuel line where the choke comes in (pic 2).

Question 1. Is that my high speed jet in pic 1? Will the crack effect performance? Should I change it out? How do I remove it?

Question 2. What is this supposed to look like? What is it?

thanks

Re: Broken Carb?

pict. 2 is the high speed jet
pict. 1 is the emulsion tube
Unfortunately you need a new carb.As emulsion tube is not a service part.
Should be able to find on in a bone yard.

P.S. high speed jet is removable thats why it has the slot.

Re: Broken Carb?

thanks. in pic 1 the tube is slotted so I thought it was the jet. In pic 2 the part looks broken... Is it?

Re: Broken Carb?

Any other options or ideas? If pic 2 is the high speed jet then that also is broken i guess since I dont see any slotted end on it.

HELP !

Re: Broken Carb?

You need to unscrew the connector for the fuel line and look down inside, you will see the orifice properly, it has a slot in it but they use a special driver to remove them, don't try or you will ruin it. I think the issue Marine mech 1 was referring to was the emulsion tube, it looks like it is split in the pic.

If you remove nipple and look in hole you will see jet has a slot and looks like a screw.
Emulsion tube is cracked and must be replaced therefore you need a new\used carb sorry.
If you can find a suitable tool to remove high speed jet (screw driver or orifice driver) make sure the replacement carb has the same size jet (number stamped on it).

Re: Broken Carb?

thanks. So can I use just a normal slotted screw driver to remove the high speed jet or does it require a special tool.

When you buy a new carb does it come with the high speed and low speed jet?

Some screw drivers will work...don't force it. Buy a used carb like the one shown. A new carb if available will be expensive.
You can also check the stock size of the jet if you know your model number you can look it up on evinrude.com epc. It should give you part number and size ie. #28

Re: Broken Carb?

Thanks everyone.

I looked online at evinrude.com epc and my carb looks a little different. My model number is E25RCUR and I dont see any emulsion tube pictured.

Also in pic 2, looking at the diagram on evinrude.com it lists the part as "SKU: 0328542
ORIFICE PLUG, (No. 47D)". Is this an orifice plug or the high speed jet....

Re: Broken Carb?

You never see the emulsion tube as you can't replace it. The orifice plug (also the high speed jet) is the part that you couldn't see behind the fitting for the carb.

Re: Broken Carb?

Contact the seller with the model number of your motor and get him to verify, part number should be stamped on the carb.

Re: Broken Carb?

I called around. Something strange here. The number stamped on my carb is 332549 but the part numbers that I got from my dealer that will fit this model are:

0396855
0395279
0431884
0398082

Any ideas?

Re: Broken Carb?

332549 is a casting# not a part# look for a metal tag on the carb, usually found on a carb bowl screw.

Re: Broken Carb?

thanks but no tag on the carb. I went to a local junk yard and the guy helped me find a carb that looks identical to mine. The only difference was the size of the high speed jet.

I ordered the correct jet (47D) and installed it in the new carb last night. I tried to start the motor and it started but was really running rough... Sounded like one of the cylinders was misfiring.

Took a look at the spark plugs and they had a bit of oil on them, both were gapped at .040. From what U am reading it should be .030. I am heading out to the parts store to get 2 new plugs since they ae cheap and gap them to .030.

Anything else I should check? How easy it is to check the spark plug wires?

Also how do I adjust the throttle linkage and low speed jet?

Re: Broken Carb?

Yep. I took the carb completely apart, except for the small disc like parts, and sprayed carb cleaner though it and blew compressed air as well. Since the high speed orifice was new I did not do anything with that more than install it. I have a carb kit for it so it was a new float, seat, needle, gaskets....

I noticed a small crack in the hose from the manual primer to the Manifold and replaced that as well.
