broke key in control box

I can not find my spare key.
I have the forward part of the broke key. Not sure if it is enough for the key machine to clamp on. Where or who might have thia style key. if i can not get one made where or who can i get the ignition part

I had to go to a local lock smith, the other places in my area didn't carry the blank for the marine application that I had. I was having an extra made so mine was simple and cheap,a few dollars. But your case will possibly be making a key from scratch if there's not enough of the original to use.
Call your local auto parts store and ask for a marine inigtion switch. Get a price, then compare to the price the locksmith gives you and go from there. The new igniton will come with two new keys, hang one on the hook in your closet, hang one in your workshop and use that one, have a third made and attach them all to something that will float, store the third one on you boat. This way if you drop one over board you have a chance to retreive it , if not then you have the spare on board to get going again, then possibly you can retreive the one you lost.

your sig shows 48spl if you have a evinrude/johnson, control there is a code number, stamped on the center, next to the key slot. that is the key number. any dealer can get you a key. they are also available on line.

Use a dental pick to extract the remainder of the key. Any local locksmith will be able to cut one. However, if you have the key code, head to the dealer. You only need the code. If it is indeed a Johnson/Evinrude key, most of the local key cutters have the blanks. I've had them made at Lowes. You simply need to find someone that's run the key shop more then 15 minutes.

• if ya have both pieces of the broke key. it can be duplicated. if you only have the head of the key that's not enough to make a new key. if ya have only the tip of the key, it may have enough info to make a key. both pieces are a for sure winner.

• if ya have a piece broke off in the lock. it can most likely be extracted. a locksmith will have the special tools needed for the extraction... usually a end user trying to extract a broke key makes it worse for locksmith to extract.

• if ya have a key broke off in the lock, a new key won't work since it won't go into the keyhole.

• if ya have the key code. a new key can be made from that number by the dealer or a locksmith...

If you can retrieve the piece of the key that is in the lock a good locksmith can use a special tool to "read" the code by measuring it. Then use a special key cutter that takes this code and cuts the new key. Pretty easy if you have the right tools.

My ignition uses any key that is close to the size of the key thats made for it. My wife's toyota key works, my house key works, my shed key works. yada yada yada. When i got the boat it didnt have a key so i jamed my shed key in there and turned as hard as i could. I heard a pop and now the problem is fixed. Cant you just jam a different key in there and turn it til the teeth inside the ignition bread and then you dont need to have a specific key. I wasn't hunting for keys all over town i just made it work. I trailer my boat so im not worried about someone starting it up and boating away with my boat. Just a sudjestion.

Take the tumblers out and you will never have to locate a key. Anything will work and when it's in the off position no one will ever know that it doesn't need a key.
