hello everybody, let me introduce myself.
i'm ron and i'm new to all of this. my wife and i bought a 1986 bayliner capri 1600 br off of a part time neighbor and we know that it needs a bunch of work. when he said "to tell you the truth, i would take $300.00 just to get rid of it" my wife said okay. it has several soft spots in the floor but otherwise really isn't in very bad shape at all. so here is the run down:

boat/ trailer/ 85hp force outboard- $300.00
new fuel line- $52.00
new ignition switch- $20.00
new battery- $122.00
(2) cans mercury power tune- $24.00
lower unit gear oil- $10.00
lower unit oil pump $10.00
don't ask why i didn't get new spark plugs while i was at the store because i just don't know why. anyway, after sitting under cover in his yard for twelve years, we started cleaning it. i had to fix 2 broken wires coming from the stator and for some reason the ground wire going to the ignition switch was cut back so i reattached that with the new switch. i set the low idle needle valves according to the force owners manual, and i couldn't believe my ears when it actually coughed to life. i let it run for a while just to be sure.

i guess that i should add to the running total $79.00 dollars for trailer tires. so far this thing has doubled in price and i'm still overwhelmed at the project in front of me. While it's not an eyesore sitting in the driveway or anything like that, i have to keep going and get it ready for the water for late fall or next spring.

You should change the impeller (water pump) on that motor ASAP if it's been sitting for 12 yrs.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but those soft spots in the deck are usually indicative of problems below the deck... namely rotten stringers and probably waterlogged floatation foam. More bad news is your rotten stringers have probably infected your transom with rot too. You should remove your decking and inspect below, you need to replace it anyway.

Lots of info and people willing to answer any qusetions you may have on this site.

help me out if i seem unrealistic, but i'd like to keep the cost of this boat around $2000.00.
so far we spent about $600.00. keeping in mind that i can do pretty much all of the work myself, $1400.00 should get me pretty far. i would like to give this boat the following:
total floor replacement
new carpet
new seats
new vinyl
new guages for the dash

thanks jigngrub.. i'm, about a 1/2 step ahead of you... already started ripping out the floor and thank god the stringers are fine... the transom seems very hard all around and is completely encapsulated ign glass

the bulk heads look good too, but the foam has to go... it is completely soaked.

p.s. i guess that i should say that what i can see of them looks good , but i'll know better once the floor and foam are completely removed.

i'll get to the local marine store tomorrow for that impeller, and anything else that you can think of.... thank you

Kind of hard to believe the foam would be soaked and the stringers are good... but if you say so!

Did you happen to drill any of the stringers yet to check for wet wood?

i'll get to the local marine store tomorrow for that impeller, and anything else that you can think of.... thank you

Pick up a fuel filter or 2 and some lower unit lube. Do you have a grease gun?

i should have mentioned that i already did the lower unit oil change.. the oil coming out was black but smooth in consistency... i didn't drill into the stringers but they are glassed really well.... but i'll check them again when the floor is completely removed and i will drill some holes through them to check...

as soon as i get the chance , i'll start posting some pics so that you guys can see if i'm missing anything...

any thoughts on removing the built in seat boxes intact would be greatly appreciated.

It's hard to put a number on what an old boat costs. I spend at least a grand a year on mine keeping it going. Having said that I put two grand in it this year and it's only worth about 1,500 if I could find someone that wanted it.

always figured that it would be a money bucket....but i also figured that if this one works out and we have fun we would trade up in a few years

btw sgbtr, i'm a huge beatles fan......love the name of your boat !!!

okay... hopefully today is the day that i get the rest of the floor out...i have to cut out the seat boxes and remove the structures from around the dash and then i can finally see the other side of the stringers.... hopefully they look just like the ski locker side...then i can begin to put it all back together....

Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

i took a bunch today.. i'll try to post tomorrow... thanks
i thought that i would get alot further than i did.... but soon after i started working we got something like an inch of rain in twenty minutes.... what a downpour... anyway after the rain i managed to remove one of the seat boxes. although not intact, i was able to save some good templates incase i go with the original seating configuration. i removed the flotation foam from the starboard side and thank god the stringers look good on that side too. the bulkhead at the stern before the battery compartment needs a closer look though.. but since i lost the daylight , that will be tomorrow ...i hope to be done with the demo part by the weekend....and start rebuilding on monday.

goodnight all ...i'll update tomorrow!!!! and as always ..thank you!!!!!!!

Re: bringing a 1986 bayliner capri back to life

today's progress update---- while at work today it was raining pretty hard and was supose to all day... i figured that i wouldn't get any work done but that's okay since i have to learn a bunch of new songs for the band.... when i got home the sun came out so i figured that i would get some work done... after a few hours with a grinder and saw and scraper, the port seat box is gone. it was actually worse than the starboard one. the port side floor felt solid but underneath it was a different story. the aft end of the boat is nearly ready and even though it is still overwhelming, but there is a glimer of hope for being ready to start rebuilding next week...

Set up an account on photobucket.com and host your pics there. Trying to use iboats as a picture host is a royal pain.

I edited your above post to put your pictures in-line. They're the perfect size and everything. Just edit it again to see what I did. Use the IMG code links that photobucket provides.

Real nice looking boat. MUCH nicer than I was expecting to see when you said you bougt an '86 Bayliner for $300!!!
