I just replaced the lower unit on my 2000 Johnson 150 outboard. What do I do for breaking it in? How long should I run it before changing the oil?
Also the seam between the lower unit and the rest of the motor has water coming out of it when it is running. Is this normal? There apears to be slots for the water so I think it's ok. Last, the temperature is running 130 -140, is this right?

Re: breaking in new lower unit

There really is no break-in on these gearcases. It certainly would'nt hurt to check, or change the oil after the first hour or so just to make sure the case is water tight, and the gear lash is set correctly. Tight running gears will leave the oil with a sulphur, or rotten egg smell. These gearcase's are all roller bearing. This type of bearing does not really break in. With something wrong they just break.
