Breaker Boxes?!?!?!

This is a great forum and I've find out learned a helluva lot, but I got a new question.

Bought a '74 Chris Craft that had been retrofitted with diesels and througout it's life been treated.. um... not so nice. The wiring is a mess, I musta pulled out 100lbs of wires out of the bilge last weekend that weren't hooked to anything, including the old engine's wiring harnesses (someone got lazy). What's even nicer is that some wires were hot with a loose end in the bilge.

Now, everything is still functional and slowly but surely I'm going to get it cleaned up. My question is, the boat now has 2 12v breaker boxes (I didn't know they made such a thing) that most of the accessories are wired into. Is this a good thing? Is it normal? Should I remove them and just wire everything up with fuses?

If the breakers are in good shape, keep 'em. It's a lot easier to reset a breaker than fumble for fuses if something overloads. (Assuming the PO used marine breakers, not something bizzare)

wonko, the boxes are standard equipment in the older chris crafts..if the original wiring is not butchered up too bad, keep them...chris at least used quality hardware back in the 'old days'......

Ah yes..Built like a real boat!!
If they are F.U.B.A.R., you might consider replacng them with new ones, or a good single box pulled from a salvage yard that accepts the knife-type fuses.
