i have a new yamaha 200 that needs break in this spring,as soon as the ice is gone.i will do it as per the instruction manual,i'm just curious as to peoples thoughts,is it ok to tie up to my dock, remove the prop, put it in gear and let it run for the first hour? i won't do it this way but is it doable? i can't see why it would have to have a load on the engine/prop if it's just at idle.

My opinion only.------Manufacturing today is computer controlled.-----Robot machines finish parts to exacting standards.------Break in today is not as critical as it was 50 years ago.

my thoughts too.i only ask because 2 other large lakes drain through mine after ice off and there is a lot of flotsan passing through before turnover and i'm hesitant to spend 10 hours of breakin time navigating my brand new, never seen water boat through all the garbage.i'm impatient to get it done, without doing any damage.

On some Yams it is critical. Otherwise be prepared to deal with the "making oil" phenomenon.

Too bad the model of the motor is not known.

Take a look at the Yamaha break in procedure. Then take a look at the Mercury Marine break in procedure.

Then you might have some idea as to why Yamaha's suffer from making oil at a higher rate than do Mercury's.

it's a 2022 yamaha f200 2.8l 16 valve dohc 4cyl.i looked up the making oil phenom.i think i'll still follow the manuals procedure.assuming my ecu will keep track of my engine performance ie:engine hours and idle hours like my vehicles do,in case it develops an issue with rings and i need to get warranty work.

running without the prop doesnt load the motor so that does nothing but glaze the rings. follow the procedure in the manual.

id run it easy for the first hour, but on load and low rpms...then after that...run her up at most rpms apart from full throttle for the remaining hours...most importantly...never at the same rpm for too long...vary the rpms often...but I also agree with racer on this...as long as you go easy the first hour or so..then some load on her for the next few hours..avoiding half throttle and the same rpms for too long...youll be grand.
