One of my engines on the new boat has this cylinder with air lines as part of the water pump. I broke the top line off removing it. Can I delete this system. My other engine just has the 2 water lines on the back. What’s the purpose of this system?

The thing is used to vent the water pump during winterization to get water out. They do fail and can cause over heating if they allow air to be sucked in while running.

Its another Merc thing that just seems to cause problems in most cases. Merc tries to make it stupid proof so folks won't bust their motor during the winter while also increasing the cost for more parts that need to be replaced

It can probably be replaced with the same of your other one but give us the motor serial number to make sure?

Also what are the 2 lines on the other motor?

I mean the in and out on the pump. Just the water lines. I can get the back plate for the pump without that air operated valve. Just wanted to be sure it wasn’t real important.

Should not be an issue, just like to verify with serial number to make sure we're not missing something

Where can I find the serial number? The numbers on the plastic cover are gone.

Above the starter on starboard side should be a Merc plate riveted on

Here is one of the serial numbers. This motor is marked as manufactured in 2005 on the ecu board. The second one is missing the tag. It’s labeled as manufactured 2002 on the ecu. Any other way to get the serial number? I actually need it for my insurance policy. The only noticeable difference between the 2 is that air actuated drain system that I’m Removing. I ordered a copy of service manual 31 so hopefully I won’t need to spend so much time asking questions here. I do appreciate the help though.
