Bravo 3 prop shaft(s) backlash check, special tool 91-805381

When checking backlash on the prop shafts, the manual calls for the use of tool 91-805381 to hold the driveshaft. Can I avoid the expense (75 bucks) of this tool and just get a helper to grip the drive shaft firmly with some padded jaw pliers? I don't do this for a living and may use that tool twice in my lifetime...

Yes, that tool just locks the shaft in place.
