Bravo 2 possible oil leakage

Hello everyone,


I have a fairly simple question: My bravo 2 merc leg oil reservoir was almost full at the beginning of the season 2 months ago. It is now nearly empty. Is this normal? should I be worried that my leg has an oil leak? Should I just add oil or could this be that that the actual leg oil has mixed with water and running the boat would be dangerous. I guess this could also be an in-cabin leak since I did notice a little bit of oil in the small amount of water under the engine.

I guess I just want to make sure I don't add oil only to find out that there is a leak on the leg and oil is mixing with water.

if leakin' inside, the hose oughta be wet with oil...

Were I to check the viscosity of the oil still inside the reservoir could that tell me if there is a problem or would that water just stay in the leg?

Typically when water mixes with the gear oil it shows up in the reservoir too. I would recommend taking the gear case drain plug loose just to the point gear oil will drain out to determine if there is/isn't water in the gear oil. If it's not milky tighten the plug back up and refill the reservoir and check for internal leaks in the engine compartment. If you don't see anything obvious I would keep a close eye on the reservoir while using the boat. I wouldn't take a chance on damaging the drive without a thorough inspection.
