tommays..

I believe teflon tape was originally brought out for PVC pipe thread connections. Guys being guys... are using it for a lot of applications... some good, and as we have both said some not so good.

we use a UL approved american made brand on steam lines(90psi)up to 2" we get much less problems with leaks than any pipe dope we have tried

dont bother with most stuff its crap from china that you cant even wrap a joint with

tommays

I hate Thread Tape with a passion.
We see so many problems with hydraulic systems in particular due to the stuff being used in the wrong application or incorrectly applied which results in unwrapping and blocking filters, screens or worse jamming control valve spools.
My preference is to use a liquid sealant but the surfaces MUST be prepared correctly.

There I,ve vented on that.

Regards

Peter

Re: Brass vs Steel

Thanks for the input on the teflon. I started using it on my race engines because I was in a hurry between runs and it was there. I can see what it would do, make stuff easier to turn, not as giving making a wedge and so on. I only use one short wrap and that's it.
Seeing this I think I will start keeping other thread sealants around the shop instead.

Who woulda thought. next to Duct Tape, sliced bread, and a pocket in a shirt this stuff was the best thing ever made!

How does tape cause a crack?, the only way I could think of cracking cast is overtighten fastners and plugs or high temps or beat it with a hammer I'v used tape for years, but as mentioned I would agree it not for all jobs, and therefore I would not use tape on a intake thats subject to high temps, or a fuel line which I have seen done, but on the boat motor intake its been fine, by the way it was Edelbrock that suggested tape was fine, but they assumme you know what your doing.

Re: Brass vs Steel

it causes cracks because good tape has much less friction than sealent and on and npt fitting it will go in easery and the taper on the thread pushes out much more at the same torque and some people dont no when to stop

even with sealent you can have a seal and then over tighten and leak again

tommays

Re: Brass vs Steel

I would go for that Tommays some people just bulldog and butcher everything they touch, what I actually do when using tape is I hand tighen plug and then give it a turn with wrench Start motor turn on water supply or whatever it is I'm sealing, If I have a leak tigthen slowly until leak stops it is surprizing sometimes how little a turn is takes to stop a leak so yes I agree tape could allow one to overtorque, but the advantage I have found with tape is the ease of removal at least thats been my experience , I do this every year since I have a R/V also that require's winterizing. Thanks for explaining Tommays.

Cast aluminum is much more suceptible than iron/steel.
