I have used SpiderWire and Stren, and did not like either..They seem to float more than mono, and shortened my casting distance. What is your favorite braid???

powerPro, I've used 80lb and 50lb...backed on the spool with mono...like it a lot.

Re: braided line?

I use 30lb for inshore fishing. Also use a 4-6 ft piece of florocarbon 20lb test for a leader with no hardware.

Re: braided line?

Braid can cut you rediculously easily. If you try to grab it and it runs through your hands, you have bone deep cuts. I was messing with my friend while surf fishing one day by going down to the water and yanking on his line while his rod was spiked. I didn't realize it and he went to set the hook. Blook just started running down my arm.
It is good though if you use it on a casting or conventional rod. I would never use it on a spinning setup. The good thing is that it's so thin that it cuts right through the water. you can also get more line of a heavier test on your spool. I may actually try to spool my casting rod with it this season.

I now use Power Pro on all of my reels, even the smaller spinning reels I use for smallmouth. I like it and have no reason to go back to mono.

Re: braided line?

It is extremely tolerant of twist - twisted braid don't tangle like twisted mono - plus has zero memory - which makes it a good candidate for spinning reels.

And one more big advantage...it lasts forever.

Re: braided line?

I prefer line that floats, and like our friends, I am stuck on Power Pro.

My casts are longer with PP. Are you bait casting or spin?

Re: braided line?

I am doing a bit of both. I fish quite a bit of structure and could use the strength of a braided line. At the end of last season I tried Iron Silk on my spinning and baitcasting reels, and liked it but I would still like the extra strength!

Re: braided line?

I've used 20# braided line on a spinning reel for Walleye. Not really for the strength but for the sensitivity. The down side is that I can break it with a strong hookset. I've learned to hate Stren Mono for its stretch and numbness. Recently, I've taken to Fireline which is sensitive yet more forgiving with hooksets. I'll try Flouro this year and see if I like it better than Fireline. I'm biased, I really like Fireline for Bass and Walleye.

"I can break it with a strong hookset"

you mean you break the fish, or the hook? or your rod? Not the line, surely! I shattered the pinion gear in a spinning reel once, setting the hook on a tree limb.

Maybe you should try it with a leader...or a slower rod...

Re: braided line?

Stren and Spiderwire are soft (almost like a soft rope). Pretty easy to get knotted up if you get slack in your line.
Fireline is stiffer / just different. I don't have the tangle/knot problems with it.
Both seem to float which helps when wathing for line movement on weightless soft plastics.
Both have zero stretch also..you can FEEL EVERTHING.
Thin diamter, cast heavy lb test a mile.

I use this stuff when fishing for "feel" or "sight" with lures that demand a hard hookset. (jigs, worms, flukes, frogs, and spinners every now and then).
I don't use it in cold weather though due to it will freeze to your bail/guides much faster than mono.
I also have a problem with it's thin diameter slipping UNDER the bail roller on spinning reels.
It also seems to be HARDER on a reel. Shortens the lifespan of a reel.
ALWAYS back braid with mono on the spool. Change it when it starts to fray, or, unspool it and re-spool it back on frayed end first. It has no memory. No need to buy new line when you wear out the end you are using.

Re: braided line?

Seriously, I broke the 20# line behind a steel leader. I resorted to wrist hooksets.

Re: braided line?

yesterday I was trying out some knots with powerPro 50lb test. I used a palomar knot to attach one end to a barrel swivel, and tried a couple different knots on the other end and used two screwdrivers to pull it apart. Couldn't find another knot that would hold - they slipped out. Tried passing the line through the swivel eye twice before tying an improved clinch knot...the swivel broke! It was a beefy swivel, too...broke the eye.

Never did break the line, not that I was trying to.

Guess the palomar knot will have to do...it's just so inconvenient when you got a big lure with multiple trebles.

Re: braided line?

I have used the Spider Wire 20# on a Baitcaster for largemouth bass and love it for the strength and castability. I do have a concern about the color of it. It comes in Moss Green and I would think that it would not blend in as well as mono. What do you guys think should this be a concern or is it transparent to the fish??

What's the shelf life of floro? Does it have any stretch?

Re: braided line?

Depends on where the mono is stored. I change mono once a month to every week or less depending on how much I fish. Mono does not last long at all. Floro and Braid seem to last alot longer and I would recommend spraying some KVD or reel majic spray to protect it and loosin it up.

Re: braided line?

last year i tried the powerpro, the fireline and the spiderwire, i fish heavy cover (sometimes can't even see the water) and sometimes flip. the best was the spiderwire stealth (for how i use it). the only drawback is its tendancy for the line to dig into the spool. kind of gets frustrating!
