Does anyone know if the Boyesen Reeds are worth the extra expense? I was thinking of installing a set on my 79 Evinrude 85 hrs. The motor is a little finicky to start when warm, but I will be rebuilding the carbs sometime this spring.
Thanks in advance.

Re: Boyesen Reeds

I would suggest Chris Carson Marine Service for reeds. They produce epoxy composite reeds that really helped my Johnson 88 SPL performance, smoother idle, quick throttle response. When rebuilding the reed blocks, be sure to resurface the reed cage surfaces. Do figure 8's, using 400 grit wet/dry paper on a very flat surface. Work the surfaces until the original machined surfaces are gone. Tiny drop of blue loctite on each screw, don't over tighten. No shims required.

With the mtr you have, I would think about the expense to do this. It was a real good mtr and why mess with it if it's running okay. Get it running right in it's stock form and you'll be happy.

Thanks, sounds like valuable info.

If it aint broke dont fix it right? Hopefully all it needs is the carbs rebuilt/cleaned. Thanks for the reply.
