Re: Bow roller marking boat

The roller is rubbing the pin strip away because its not positioned correctly, no offence, but that stop post is junk!

Re: Bow roller marking boat

I agree but have not had any luck finding a replacement locally. Also I believe it to be the original that came with the boat/trailer combo from manufacturer. I want to figure out what my problems are before replacing so the new one doesn't cause the same issues.I'd rather be surfing.

Champion Trailer Parts can sell you a Better Bowstop.......

What you've got is Shakey at Best,.........

You might be able to Adjust it to Fit Better.......

A slightly smaller photo, that shows the Whole front, including the trailer would Help.....

It Looks like you've got that Cranked Way Too Tight against the Roller......

I agree with bondo, it seems you do have the boat to far up the trailer. That boat looks fairly heavy so you need a post thats strong enough to help stop it coming through the back window of your car in an emergency! You can't just rely on the rear tie-downs to hold it. Have a look around your nearest boat yard for idea's on suitable posts.

Good luck, enjoy your boat.

bowrollerpic.jpg

Full pic of tower. I did adjust the bow roller down as far as I can but still seems like it should be lower. Other pics I have found has roller just above U bolt for bow line. Looked on chapion trailers.com and the only towers they had seemed to be even taller. Cant move boat back any further as it currently sits with transom at end of bunk boards. Please ignore my neighbors POS in the background. thanks for any advice.

Re: Bow roller marking boat

It appears, that you could slide the Bow Stop back another 3"s or so, on the tongue beam, back to the Cross member.......
That,+ Not cinching it Up, Soo Tight..... Should be All that's needed........

If you don't like That,......
Some Heat on the Uprights that hold the Roller, Right where it's already Rusty, You could Bend it Back,+ Down some more.......

The Biggest Problem I see is,......
You're Cranking it Up Too Tight.......
And,.....
Where's your Safety Chain that's Supposed to attach the Bow Eye to the Trailer Frame,..??..??.....

Re: Bow roller marking boat

From the photo it appears that the two arms that hold the roller right now have been added. I would bet that the roller is sopposed to mount in the top hole of the original post, which puts it at the correct height - that being just above the bow eye when the boat is fully loaded on the trailer. It appears that the boat won't move forward enough, nor the winch post back enough, to make that happen with this boat without modification.

The first thing I'd do is remove the added brackets and move the post back as far as it will go to see if it's close. If you're lucky you will be able to winch the boat forward the extra distance and snug it up against the roller.

Ideally you want the bow eye to wedge up against the bottom of the roller with the rope or strap running beneath the roller like it is now.

If this doesn't work and you have access to a welder you can fab up a couple of brackets that effectively move the roller back toward the hull at the correct height.

Replace the black roller with a clear one and you'll have your problem solved - but add the safety chain as Bondo mentioned.

Re: Bow roller marking boat

I have a question about the rope/cord from the winch to the bow eye. It looks like that is a very lightweight cord to secure the boat.

I don't know the weight of your boat, but remember that the purpose of this line is not just to winch the boat up to the bow stop, but to keep the boat from going through the back of your truck in the event of an accident or sudden stop.

I don't know how many G's you would experience this case (does anyone have figures for this?), but I can imagine 3 G's would not be unreasonable. In this event a 1000# boat would try moving forward with 3000# of force.

Of course there are a lot of other factors, but you can see where a lot of tension can be put on this one connection.

Would this cord hold?

Re: Bow roller marking boat

To begin with you are too concerned about the stripes on your Boat. The winch stand looks way too cheesy for your and your families safety. No safety chain? Rope on the winch stand no way.
Your boat if it is 19ft must weigh nearly 3,000 lbs. You need a Winch post with the two Bow stops and as everyone has said make sure they are yellow. replace the rope with a 2 inch strap with good hook rated over what your total boat weight is. Loaded and fully fueled. Good hooks are usually already attached to the winch strap. The stop should have two wedges on it. The bottom wedge would go between the eye bolt and top wedge over the stripe or in the case of my boat 20 ft the eye bolt is in between the two rubber wedges. Lube the winch regularly. That makes it a little tight to hook up the safety chain but it works. In any case the rubber V doesn't, shouldn't have to ride on the stripes. You can also buy a chrome stick on tape to cover the points where the wedges rub, or touch the boat. I'm sorry but your safety is more important than trying to salvage a winch stand that is inadequate and uinsafe for your size of boat. If you should decide to replace the winch itself. Buy a double Geared two speed winch.
