I'm redoing [painting] my boat and I've stripped the hull clean including the bow-rails . my question is . they seem easy to replace but do i really need them . i don't have allot of real boating time in so I'm wondering if they come in usefull . cant do with out them , doesn't matter or what .

The Coast Guard requires you to have them if you have riders up there. So, it's one of those things that would only be illegal if you were caught underway with people riding in the bow.

I think that what ever you take off the boat, should be put back on. Not just for safety, but to keep the boat in its original style. I don't think having little boating time has anything to do with not having rails. If they are stainless steel, and dull, you can use a little scotch brite to clean them up, and boat wax to make them shine. Also, if you didn't want them on, then you'd want to fill the screw holes to keep water out. My question to you is, "why wouldn't you want them back on"?

They saved me from a BIG injury at the ramp once when i sliped and did a stupid human trick

Cant really say what happened BUT there were there to keep me from face planting from 6' in the air to a cement ramp :(

Any marine salvage yards around your area? There are a couple here that have Tons and Tons of railing in perfect or near-perfect condition.

I would have to agree. If it came with the rails put them back on for looks and safety. They are on it for a reason.

I like rails, for safety and comfort, but honestly, if you dont want them on your boat, you dont have to put them back on. LOTs of boats dont have bow rails...it just means you cant sit up there underway.
