As far as moving the bow light,..

Couldn't you mount lights on the side of the cuddy????

I know I've seen that on some bigger boats, And even the Kingfisher multi-species boats,...

Yup, I could put nav lights right behind the cabin windows. The regs are pretty forgiving under 26' as far as location as long as you're visible.

You won't regret going with a bow mount Chem, I love em. As said above go with the longest shaft you can, you run some pretty big water and waves so you want to make sure the motor stays in the water while the boat is bobbing up and down.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, D2! You've had a few of these hulls so your advice/encouragement is appreciated.

No problem Chem, I had the Ipilot on the SS 201 and it was awesome. The current Holiday has a 54" Motor Guide Wireless remote and it works great.

I had a Starcraft Islander with a bow like yours. If you have to stand on that bow to get to a trolling motor, it's a recipe for disaster. Maybe you can access it thru the hatch?

I hear you on that, for sure. It'll either be through the hatch or I'll spring for that new ulterra. That bow with no rails and narrow gunwales is no place to be by yourself.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS buy the longer shaft if there is ANY question... you can easily cut em shorter but you can't stretch em...

Do NOT mount it so that the head hangs over the side when folded though... that is a recipe for di$a$ter when it catches on a dock.

Ya, I'll be spending some time with a tape measure and the various motor dimensions. I definitely agree on the overhang hazard.

The head won't catch on a dock if you auto deploy, and leave it in the trimmed up position.

Ha, yeah. I was originally planning to do that when I got the boat...so glad I came to my senses with the help of the resto forum.

Speaking of jas, where has that guy been?

Jas was around in October, but no posting as far as I know. :noidea:

Chem - Let me explain this to you. I'll keep it simple.
  1. Write a letter to Santa. Tell him you would like an Ulterra. Make sure to tell him you've been a very good boy.
  2. Go sit on Santa's lap at the mall. Tell him you would like an Ulterra. Make sure to tell him you've been a very good boy.
  3. Christmas Eve put out some booze (the good stuff), a ham sandwich (was thinking venison jerky, but Rudolph might smell it on his breath ) and a note reminding him about the letter and mall visit. Make sure to tell him you've been a very good boy.
  4. Christmas morning grab the long box with the new Ulterra and thank Santa.
If the sucker doesn't come through, gobble the sandwich and drink the booze. Forget about being a good boy anymore cuz it doesn't pay off and mutter :censored: bah humbug under your breath the rest of the day. :drama:

Minnkota and Motor Guide have both tried that auto-deploy in the past. I think the Minnkota was called the Genesis. I don't know the details but I do know they were rare when they came out and you never see them around anymore....which to me sounds like it never worked great.

I think it's a great idea but it just seems really prone to issues that only a specialist can fix.

Yeah, I've read about those genesis models. I'm willing to bet that they've ironed out whatever issues those had. Which is not to say that the new ones are fail
-proof, and probably not a DIY repair if it does go out.

After digging the bow out from under snow and pulling the tarp, I laid out the configuration for a 60" shaft. With the correct offset mount location, it'll clear the hatch and stay inside the rubrail when stowed. I may need to fab a reinforced Starboard mount that extends s few inches off the bow. So at this point I'm looking at a 24v 60", and may opt for the power drive 70#. Remember that this unit will mostly be steering while the kicker does the heavy lifting, er, pushing. I'd like to get an enclosure made this winter and the power drive at a little over $1K is half the price of the ulterra, so more cash for canvas. I also would never use a foot pedal, and the PD ipilot just comes with the remote.

Thanks for all the help, everyone. I'll let you know how it works out.
