Re: Bought my first 32" flat screen TV

I remember the days of CRT computer monitors. All that wasted desk space!!! I now have a couple of 19" LCDs sitting up against the wall, and my desk is covered in unpaid bills...

Enjoy the step into the 20th century SF... ;) And yes, TV sound is rubbish. I have our LCD-TV in the lounge plumbed in through the Hifi... Best sound EVER!

LOL...haven't heard them called that for awhile!

So, what do YOU call them? You know, those things that have a DVD player, a turntable, a tuner, and now my TV sound...

Maybe he has a flip phone too.........

Up until about a couple of years ago, yes... But I also have dual screens on my computer and run an MPI engine in the boat... (I guess you guys are still running points?...)

Does it have a wood cabinet too?

Yes, of course it has a wooden cabinet, don't they all... (with a nice smoked glass door).

As for hijacking, most of the hijacking its being done by Mods, so who's going to scold them? And as SF is fine with it, where's the problem? :D

Cheers,

Chris.....

What would you recommend for that ?. Without breaking the bank.

It depends on what out jacks your new set has. With RCA LR audio out you can patch into your existing stereo or surround sound system like I did.

If from scratch I suspect a sound bar is your best option.

They have cell phones down there?

Bruce, c'mon.
They invented wireless communication Down Under.

Ecologically friendly, too. They don't rely on electricity, they are wind-powered.:D

So here's a kicker in the vein of HD. The cable company now scrambles even local channels that used to be HD as of last week. They now require a descrambler box for every TV. They sent me two though I need several more and they don't let you have HD without paying for a different box. Recall how frugal I am and my refusal to pay for cable tv (we have Netflix for content)...so now we have a house full of HD TV's, wired to whole house audio that can be controlled through the wifi and from the walls in each room and I don't have HD. Large screen TV's and 480i don't mix well. What I got last week I now have to pay double for but they claim they did it not as a money grab but for our convenience. We can't get a decent OTA signal but need the basic cable to get cable internet yet you can't get any tv with the basic cable anymore without paying even more just to descramble it. I really hate utility monopolies.

$42 of my monthly cable bill is rental of four boxes and a dvr. This was added last yr when the bill was $7 for a single dvr in the den for movies and the four other sets did not need a box. Cable guy said it was an effort to reduce piracy.

Right, they've always scrambled cable just not local channels. They have made the built in digital tuners in TV's useless. No more built in guide functions, etc. It seems that while I've been paying for the lowest possible cable for years in order to have cable internet, the fact that the local channels were in HD is considered piracy. There was a FTC ruling last year that the cable companies fought for which they twisted and used as the rational to scramble the locals. They formerly were not allowed to do that or so I understand. I may have to see if I can get some sort of high end antenna because going back to 480i on 55" TV's just doesn't work.

The best HDTV picture I have ever seen was powered by a $30- broadband antenna. Lots of those available up to $60 or $70
Since yours needs to be "high end", you could shop around and probably find something that does the same job for $100 or so. :)
