"freeze" plugs are actually 'core plugs' . . .they are not to prevent freeze damage . . . they are put there to clear the casting remains out after the fabrication process.

Why do people call these freeze plugs?

maybe because that is the urban myth, and they do pop out sometimes when it freezes. I have seen that. but i did not know that they were not for that purpose. i have heard them called that for 40 years or so. learn something every day!

I've heard that also, but then why are they plugs? Would only take a couple seconds with a welder to make sure they never come out again, but despite that, they use very tight friction fit plugs..

From personal experience I"ve seen freeze plugs pop from freezing. They aren't a 100% sure bet though, it might only save you from a very light frost.

Good call! I see they have what I think is the same motor on ebay for $2199; $1799 on your link. $400 difference. I owe you a beer.

3 0L Mercruiser Base Marine Engine 140 HP 2013 New in Stock Now | eBay

Look closely and you'll see the less expensive unit is a "reman" for $1799 and the $2199 is "new". I personally would buy the "new" unit and in addition to that, it says the new unit ships immediately where the reman is 2-3 weeks.

There might be other differences also but those were the 2 that stood out.

Because they do frequently pop out when the engine freezes. Although it is not their original design, they occasionally prevent a block crack.

The fact that they were not designed to be freeze protection, is not known by many.

Where I live it can get to -45. So a frozen engine, no matter the vehicle, is completely fractured. I've only seen a couple of these plugs pushed loose, but many, many cracked blocks.
