1959, Evinrude's Golden Anniversary year. 1909-1959.

What do you want to know about it? It is going to need some work. Coils and a water pump impeller if nothing else. And new hoses. Is the tank clean inside?

Fuel mix is 16:1, one pint of TCW-3 outboard oil per gallon of regular unleaded.

EDIT. EDIT. EDIT. !!!! That is 1/2 pint per gallon. One pint to 2 gallons. Brain crash. Intellectual overload.

5518 = 1959 5.5hp
Those good old engines, will need some work to bring it back. You will probably have to replace the ign system, coils, points, plugs. Will need a new water pump, will have to pull the pwerhead to replace.
Did you get the gas tank with it?
If you are giong to keep and repair this engine you should invest in a OEM manual, it will be worth its weight in gold to you.
Look in the "Top Secret File", it will ansewer a lot of questions.

No it didn't have a tank with it. I don't know if I will keep it for a pond motor or sell it ? It does have compression and a spark . Bought it from a 93 year old mans barn it has the starting instructions and all decals on motor and plenty of paint. It also has a mixture knob for high and low speed on the front of motor next to the choke ?? IS this motor worth anything?

Very clean and it would make a nice little fishing motor. If you're looking to sell, don't expect to get rich. A lot of guys on this forum flip motors and could tell you better. It would be worth more in running condition though.

Wow - that's a beauty. Unfortunately, they're not worth a lot, especially without the gas tank. I just sold a 1955 7.5hp in good running condition without a tank for $125. I had good used parts on hand to get mine running. Chances are you'll need to put $100-150 in parts into it to get it running, not counting the labor. Then you might get $250-300 for it - it looks really nice, and looks go a long way toward selling a motor.

I bought my 55 for $75 although I have to say that one that you have is in great shape, I'd get it running and sell it to someone who would want it if you don't want to keep it.

Nice looking motor!!! I would not sell it if I were you. You wouldn't get more than 200 or (300 tops) if has good compression and ran very good. Keep that little gem!!! After you get it cleaned and good running condition, then you have one heck of dependable motor and will give you years of service and enjoyment. Parts are still available here on iboats, BRP, Napa, Sierra...etc.

Here is a link to a parts breakdown for your motor.

Just think a moment....have you price a brand new motor of about 5hp (doesn't matter what the brand)...your looking at better than $1,500.

Even if you don't use that often, it can be a good back up. Hope you decide to keep and get her running. There a lot of experts on this forum that would like nothing better than help you get that motor running.

Nice link for good reading regarding your motor.

Good luck

Re: bought a motor need info 5.5hp evinrude

Thanks guys for the info and links . In the first picture the duct tape on flywheel has the spare shear pin and cotter key.:D The compression is good it will suck your thumb in the spark plug hole. I wished i'd looked for the tank didn't think or know about it . I know now a 89 model rude hose don't work.( Read first post to see what I know about this motor)

Now I got some plugs in town and a gallon of gas I'd like to get it running but, I don't have the fuel line for it can i put the gas line on fuel bowl and bypass the coupling?

Where does the water pump pee stream come out? Exhaust? I'm used to having a hose or hole on the cowl.

I can buy nonethonol gas if i put it in this motor is it going to eat up the fuel hoses and carbs? The fuel bowl is empty and no varnish in it.

I don't have any intentions of paying for a new truck just curious as to the worth or if it looks neat like my wife said. ( nice way of putting it.:D)

More questions to come probably . Going to the garage to play with it. Thanks again

You do not have a tell-tale, the water will come out of the exhaust on the backside.
You can run the engine by putting a hose onto the carb inlet, will have to have the tank higher than the carb and suck on the hose to get fuel flow and then put hose on carb. The taste of oil/gas mixture really sucks, don't ask me how I know this.

Thanks I use the primer bulb and take one end off the hose.

Different size hose, I beleave the duel line hoses were a lot smaller, could rig up an adaptor of some sort i guess. Rember the tank still has to be above the carb.

You can test the motor by putting a non-pressure tank higher than the motor, but if you want to use the motor, you'll have to get a 2-line pressure tank as the motor has no fuel pump.

Re: bought a motor need info 5.5hp evinrude

As others have said, your motor has no fuel pump. It makes use of a "pressure tank" to feed the fuel system. One of the nipples on the hose connector, is plumbed to a nipple under the carb, on the intake manifold. This supplies pressure impulses from the back side of the pistons as the engine runs. This is why the correct tank for the motor has two hoses - one to supply pressure to the tank and one to feed fuel back to the carburetor.

There is a way to convert the motor to a fuel pump, but you have to take a check valve out of it. The valve is what keeps the pistons from supplying pressure/suction pulses, as the pistons move back and forth. In the pressure tank setup, you want pressure only, while you want both pressure and suction, in a pulse type fuel pump arrangement. If the conversion is done, most people use a Mikuni fuel pump, rather than an OMC part.

The easiest way to deal with lack of a pressure tank, however, is to surf EBay for one. They sometimes get a little pricey, but if you are patient, you can usually find one for a reasonable bid.

That's a great little motor and if you have something to put it on, I would keep it!

keep on eye on craigslist for crappy old boats for sale.
Take a look at the pictures, when you see one that has your tank in the boat, call and offer the seller $20 for just the tank.

I have never had someone say no.

Gearcase kit - $25
Water pump - $40
crank seals - $10
Carb kit - $20
Plugs - $5
wires - $15?
Points & cond. - $35
Coils (2) - $50
Rope - $3
---------------------
Total $203
+ shipping

Heh Heh - yeah I just bought a 4 gallon tank with no rust inside, good hoses and the connector. The guy actually wanted $20, but I offered him $15 and he took it. (I would have given him $20 if he balked):D

Will this gas tank work? It has three prongs but it is not as old as the motor. What do you think? Do they even make new hoses for these or do you have to find old ones?

If it is an OMC tank it will work, they only made one style of pressure tank. You can buy new hose, but make sure you get the old connectors on each end, new connectors will cost a fortune.

Re: bought a motor need info 5.5hp evinrude

That's not a pressure tank, pressure tanks don't have a quick connect fitting on the tank, they are straight into 2 lines of equal size. They did make different size pressure tanks and some with metal and plastic primer buttons but they will all work.

This is a pressure tank, note the big cap and the direct lines.
