Hello all,

I have a 72' Sidewinder i am restoring.

Boat history;
The boat originaly came with a metalic gel coat on the topside and hull.
But one of the previous owners painted the top side White.

At this point I would like to repaint the top side. After sanding with 120grit today the old top side paint still has some very deep gouges to the original get coat but not all the way to the fiber.. What produt would i use to fill in these shallow gouges?

After i fill in the gouges,,,,do i need to prime before painting?

I did not sand all the way down to the original gel coat...I just sanded the top top coat, Do i need to sand it all the way down.

Any suggestions.

If you get to the gelcoat...... fill the scratches (gouges) with peanut butter (do a search in restoration for "peanut butter" if you go with bondo just be advised it actually soaks in water.

Depending on what paint you use, you can also purchase corresponding fillers i.e. Interlux brand paints recommends different fillers pending on location (below or above the waterline) of the fix in question. They are epoxy products so you can't go back with gelcoat. I'm uncertain about other brands.

Using wood flour to make peanut butter soaks in water too.
And wood holds water unlike talc.

Like big red said it depends on where on the boat and what your overcoating with.
