Hi all...
New to the boat world and the forum. I've just bought a 22' teal that needs a complete refit, full ceiling and new floor. What I wanted to know was what is the best thing for me to use to bond wooden battens to the fibreglass roof so I can install a new tongue/groove ceiling? As I've got to completely refit the sink/cooker unit and basically rebuild the lot from scratch, I'll be wanting to bond quite a bit of wood to the glass structure here and there throughout the boat as I believe that nailing it to the GRP structure isn't a good idea? (Joke...) It has centre floor stringers that I can use to fix my plywood floor but without removing the old woodwork that's in there currently, I've no idea what lurks behind those!
Once again, any help gratefully appreciated as I'm really looking forward to ripping the ridiculous interior out (I have photos if anyone is interested!) and making my mark on it!
Thanks guys! :D

Re: Bonding wood to fibreglass help!

hi duffers......welcome to i boats...

i think youll find this site fantastic for anything about boats....
the moderators are all top notch...and each a guru in their own area.
some of the members we have here are just simply...top notch pros.

i think well need pics to know for sure....but i might try pl preimum construction adheasive as a glue....you will need a brace from the floor to the bottom of the wood you are trying to tack up there.....then add some fiberglass tabbing from the top to the side of the wood

Hi Oops!
Yep, you're right about the forum and the site gurus! Very impressed! I'm VERY new to boats therefore VERY new to anything to do with fibreglass! I've never done any glassing in my life. I was hoping to just be able to bond my wooden supports to the boat structure but its beginning to sound like I need to do a lot more! Jeez! I've basically got to rip out all the internal stuff in there like the crappy sink / cooker unit and the raised section where the helm seats are etc. I've been having a trawl over the site and the internet in general and it sounds like I've got quite a bit of work to do! Still, a nice project!

Got a digital camera? Take some photos of your project and post them. People will be able to give you really great advice if they can see the project.

When it comes to attaching wood to boat hull, I had great success with gluing wood strips to the hull with epoxy, then attaching the accessories to the wood. If you need the wood curved to match the hull shape, then cut a strip of say 3/4" ply x 1.5" wide, then run on a table saw and cut half way through every inch or so. That will make it very flexable and easy to glue to the hull and easy to brace until the epoxy sets.

Sounds like a nice re-fitting project. Love to see those pics.

Mark.

epoxy is a very good glue........it will work but it still needs braces to hold it in place as the glue drys
