When I get my transom rebuilt I am going to have to drill motor mount holes which I have never done before. Are there any tricks on how to get these lined up properly? Can you buy a pattern to place on the transom to mark your holes?
you can make your own pattern real easy but first u must find the center of the boat and the center of the motor mount then make the pattern of the mount using cardboard mark the center of mount and then align them both tape the glass off both sides in the area first so when u drill you dont splinter your glass
to make it easier drill a pilot hole, the the correct size for you bolt, be sure to put sealer on the bolt and in the hole. no point in letting water into a new transom.
Won't the original holes still be there, or does your motor have a different pattern?
I have used cardboard to create a pattern from the motor. Put masking tape over the areas to be drilled to keep the gel from chipping. Make sure to use liberal amounts of 4200 or 5200 to seal the holes when the bolts are installed.
Or you could drill the holes 1/2" bigger than they should be, fill these holes with thickened epoxy, then drill the correct size holes in the center of the plug. this will ensure that everything is sealed up.
