Bogging in relation to distributor

It’s kind of a pain, but maybe it’s the best solution.
Kind of like the boat guy showing up every spring trying to warranty his cap/rotor?

If the counter person is sympathetic you'll get a new set free. 20 sets in ten years NAPA will stop giving you things

The spark isn't getting to the wire end efficiently, the result of excess resistance from corrosion/age of ignition components, last of which would be coil/ecm

The line of products is called Echlin and they carry a lifetime warranty so the counter people are always very cool about exchanging it. I’ll try to find the article that talks about why Napa developed the special style crab cap to address the issues that plagues the other ones.

Fully aware of aftermarket parts suppliers in regards to marine applications

My comment wasn't indicative of NAPA's development of special parts in regard to oem manufacturer's creation of specific components regarding long term issues. The companies that created and have specific use relationships have already provided the work regarding replacement/maintenance parts. NAPA has simply "followed suit". This is evident in their retail price and apparently warranty

I'm curious as to your experience with warranting a cap/rotor with NAPA after normal installation/use after 6 months

It’s been super easy to get a free one each time. They don’t even bother looking at what’s wrong with it because they know it’s got a lifetime warranty. If they ask, I just tell them that the amount of corrosion was surprising.

The first link points to a distributor cap that has brass. The ones that I am buying look 100% to be aluminum.


The one thing I have not done, is checked to make sure that the vent/breathing hole is clear of debris.

The theme here is that a weak spark is suspected. Cap/rotor get corroded and bogging down occurs. Replace and all good for a while. Elsewhere in this string is the suggestion that that other items. like the coil, can be the culprit of a weak spark > if the coil is weak to start with a little corrosion on cap/rotor is enough to cause the issues. How to test?

They make a simple device to determine how strong the spark is > a spark tester. It’s a tool that goes in line with the spark plug (or coil) and has an adjustable gap. You visually watch the spark jump this gap and by adjusting the size of the gap get a sense of the voltage output. See pic below for what they look like. While they are inexpensive, I have found them difficult to use.

I recently ran across an inductive device that will determine the voltage range and its much easier to use. However, it pricy (about $80). Link to the mfg. Always looking for an excuse to add to my tool collection I convinced myself to get one. And I have used it on my VP 5.0 GXi-E. It worked as advertised.

Unfortunately, the voltage ranges are wide. A green (good) light indicates 3,000 to 28,000 for large engines per this video I found on the device: link. So, you may still get a green light but still have too low of voltage > I suspect (but do not know) the coil output should be about 25k. So, unless you spring for an expensive analyzer, I do not know of a way to test voltage the plugs are seeing.

Also let us know if the vents are plugged on the distributor.
